How We Work at Local Counselling

Person-Centred Counselling

Person-centred counselling is grounded in the theory that individuals have an inherent capacity for growth and self-understanding when provided with the right relational conditions.

Rather than directing or diagnosing, the therapist offers:
- Careful, attentive listening
- Empathy and emotional attunement
- Acceptance without judgement
- A consistent and confidential space

The focus is on your experience — your thoughts, feelings and meaning-making. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes the primary vehicle for change.

Sessions are led by you. There is no predetermined agenda or structured programme.

Through open exploration, clients often develop:
- Greater self-awareness
- Emotional clarity
- Increased confidence in decision-making
- A stronger sense of personal autonomy

Person-centred therapy can be particularly valuable for those seeking depth, reflection and a non-directive space to process complex emotions or life experiences.

Intergrative Counselling

Integrative counselling draws on more than one therapeutic model, allowing the therapist to tailor their approach to the individual.

This may include elements of:
- Relational approaches
- Psychodynamic understanding
- Cognitive and behavioural strategies
- Attachment-informed work

Rather than adhering strictly to one framework, integrative therapy considers what may be most helpful for the client at a particular time.

Sessions remain collaborative and reflective, but the therapist may:
- Offer psychological insight
- Highlight patterns or recurring themes
- Introduce practical strategies where appropriate
- Support deeper exploration of relational or developmental experiences

Integrative therapy can be helpful for those who value both relational depth and structured reflection.

Choosing an Approach

Both person-centred and integrative counselling are grounded in professional ethics, confidentiality and reflective practice.

The most important factor in therapy is often the quality of the therapeutic relationship. We are happy to discuss the differences between approaches and help you decide which feels right for you.
